We have updated our Online and Recorded Classes page to reflect the full list of Recorded Online Classes which are now available for rent.  These are the meticulously edited video recordings of the online classes which were recently held and reflect the functionality of the current version of Earth Volumetric Studio.  The rental of each class includes the additional materials, data and/or applications which were generated during the class, and are provided by download. Major Release of Earth Volumetric Studio 2016.9

Earth Volumetric Studio 2016.9 has been released and is available for immediate download.  New sample projects and an updated PDF Converter have also been released. We certainly can’t claim that this software release rivals the August release which was the formal release of Earth Volumetric Studio and our first 64-bit software version. However, it does offer some very important features that will affect virtually every user and therefore, I encourage you to take a few minutes and read this email carefully so you understand the important changes that we’ve made.   3D Publishing: For those who have embraced 3D Publishing to either 3D PDFs or Sketchfab, you are almost certainly familiar with the texture_colors module and the fact that it is essential to creating good 3D PDFs and that has been incompatible with Sketchfab. You’ll be surprised then to find that we have deprecated texture_colors. However we have a great reason. Virtually all modules in Studio now create output that uses texturing for coloring. This means that the coloring challenges for 3D PDFs are gone. For those of you who haven’t used texture_colors before, it provides significantly improved rendering of surfaces, especially those with high gradients. The changes we have made will make everything you do look better. Sometimes it will be a subtle difference and sometimes dramatic. The greater news is that we’ve figured out how to make Sketchfab support textures, including texture_colors type coloring, textured geologic layers and aerial photos. This means that Sketchfab and 3D PDFs are virtually identical in their ability to create 3D model content. You’ll also find that colored lines like axes and streamlines work in both 3D PDFs and Sketchfab. There are still limitations to both of these media, but both are dramatically improved. New 3D PDF Converter Required: With these changes, a new 3D PDF Converter was required. It is on our website for download and everyone with current maintenance (all Premier customer are automatic) can install it and it should run without any license updates from C Tech. If your PDF Converter license is out of maintenance, this new version will not run, but you can contact and we can provide a quote to bring your license up to date. Please note: VRML files created with this version will not convert to 3D PDFs with the older version of the 3D PDF Converter. New Training Videos: 3D Kriging and Advanced Gridding

We have just posted two new series of public training videos for Earth Volumetric Studio. The first series is on 3D Kriging in three parts: Part One focuses on krig_3d, some of its basic properties and discusses the limitations of its flat-topped rectilinear gridding in anticipation of Part Two. Part Two demonstrates how easy it is to incorporate krig_3d_geology when doing 3D kriging so that your grid is conformal to site topography and/or includes site stratigraphy. Part Three introduces draw_lines and triangulate_polygons to create a user-defined area, which we then use area_cut and intersection to subset the model to show the region inside or outside of that area. Finally, we explore volumetrics and its important settings to ensure that volume and mass analysis is performed correctly. The second series is on Advanced Gridding: Part One introduces krig_3d_geology’s Finite Difference Gridding option which provides a very flexible means to create a rotated rectangular 2D grid with complex cell size distributions. This video covers it basic functionality and is recommended for all users. Part Two continues Part One to add area_cut, polyline_spline and triangulate_polygons in order to create a grid that is confined to a region which closely conforms to the concave hull of a riverine dataset. We are pleased to announce the September-October 2016 online classes for Earth Volumetric Studio. These are described at The page includes a PDF Registration form with the schedule for these class offerings. This form must be submitted for each student wishing to participate. These classes have been scheduled to accommodate all U.S. time zones. At this time we are offering three series of classes: A repeat of the Introduction to Earth Volumetric Studio Series in four, 4 hour sessions. A repeat of the Migration from MVS to Earth Volumetric Studio Series in two, 4 hour sessions. An Advanced Training Class Series with two different single session topics: Python Scripting in Studio Advanced Variography in krig_3d The Intro series is targeted at new users, whereas the Migration class is specifically for EVS-Pro and MVS users who are relatively new to Studio. The Advanced Classes are for anyone with prior experience who want to expand their expertise to include Python automation and advanced variography and kriging optimization. Premier Program customers may use their free training credits towards the cost of these classes. Earth Volumetric Studio 2016.8 is now available to download. I hope that you will forgive my being a bit long winded in this announcement, as I feel this is truly a momentous occasion for C Tech and our customers. C Tech has been in business now for 27 years and I have personally been involved with 3D modeling and visualization for 39 years. I saw the need for Environmental Visualization System (the original EVS) in 1989 and we had our first commercial Unix-based software available in 1990. However, in 1994 when Windows NT was released we were ready with a product for Windows and our market took off. Over the next 22 years our software grew and evolved into a line of products that included the 4DIM Player, EVS for ArcView, EVS-Standard, EVS-Pro, MVS and the EnterVol for ArcGIS product line. When we started on EnterVol over 5 years ago we tried to step back and not be restricted by backwards compatibility with EVS & MVS and there were some interesting advances that came from that. At the same time that EnterVol began we started brainstorming the next generation of our EVS product line, which brings us to today’s announcement. For those of you that recognize that today we offer only two primary products: Earth Volumetric Studio and EnterVol, you might wonder why our product line has shrunk. The answer is our users. We listened to the frustration of users with EVS-Standard or Pro who needed MVS features but couldn’t convince their management to upgrade. We see our EnterVol suite of products as our entry level software and Studio as our flagship. We wanted all of our EVS & MVS users to be able to take advantage of all of the amazing features we were developing in Studio, so about one year ago, we decided to offer only a single version of Earth Volumetric Studio which would be a super-set of MVS functionality. Nearly 4 years ago we reached out to a select group of users, we nicknamed the MVS Influencers. They were chosen, you might say, because they were the proverbial squeaky wheels. These were the users that our tech support group heard from a lot. We wanted to make sure that our next-gen technology wasn’t developed in a vacuum, and to that end, you have seen us put out quite a few Candidate Releases of Earth Volumetric Studio as we have striven to implement our ideas and theirs. Today also marks the end of Candidate Releases. There is a part of me that would like to say that Earth Volumetric Studio version 2016.8 is the best software that we could possibly deliver to our customers. But if I waited until we could make it no better, it would never be ready. We are a creative bunch and I assure you that as good as it is today (and it is amazing), it will only continue to improve with each future release. We have so many great ideas, that it is a hard task just prioritizing what we should tackle next. It is time to explain why this release is such a big deal. Update on Animating Web-Based Models

I wanted to post a quick correction to my announcement on 3D Publishing to the web.  I started writing that post weeks before it was released because we were working on the examples for our website.  During that time, Sketchfab shared with us a solution for animating web-based models.  Unlike our 4DIM and PDF animations which are frame-based, the Sketchfab animations must have a time duration assigned to each VRML frame.  The first example showing the railyard has 8 frames which flip on 5 second intervals.   We’ve been told that Sketchfab will soon add the ability to specify frames vs. times which will make things even better.
