Problem with Geology to Raster

I'm having a problem with Geology to Raster. I specified a rectilinear grid with 101 nodes from 1445000 to 1455000 in X, and 131 nodes from 217000 to 230000 in Y in Krig3D. When I save my grids in Surfer ASCII format and examine the header, the first four lines are:

DSAA
101 131
1452100 1162100
216900 229900

The X coordinate is completely different than what was specified in Krig3D and the maximum is less than trhe minimum, which causes Surfer 8 to crash. The Y coordinate is also shifted 100 ft. Can I assume that only the header is wrong, and adjust it manually?

Make sure you're running with Small Fonts (XP) or Stardard DPI Scaling (96pt - Vista). This is a requirement for EVS and MVS.

My guess is you have your system set to use Large Fonts. This is available in the display settings, under the advanced panel.

Some of the pop up windows don't show all information in the window - the window appears to be too small to contain the module application. For instance, the georeference image application in overlay aerial cuts everything off right of the half-way point of the "Y Map" column, and everything below the "3X" and "2nd OrderPolynomia" radio buttons. I've tried different screen resolutions, confirmed that small font settings are being used. Don't know what else to do.

Thanks.

Plume visualization discussion

Brian,

You've raised several very important issues related to site characterization and monitoring. Unfortunately there are limits to what can be done to improve results if the data has already been collected and no more data can be obtained.

If you have a site where data was not collected deep enought to see the bottom of the plume or over a large enough x-y extent to bound it, there is little that can be done. Geostatistics will project the plume "trends" based on the data that you have and this is often undersirable (though it may be very defensible).

When dealing with time domain data, missing samples and poorer historical data are common problems. There are interpolation schemes built into our routines to handle these issues in the best POSSIBLE way, but to quote an old saying "you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear".

Acknowledging the seriousness of these issues, it is clear that the best solution for NEW work is to use a higher standard for initial site characterization. Using our DrillGuide technology will help ensure well characterized plumes with the fewest possible samples (lowest cost!).

For existing sites, the solution may also be to use DrillGuide and min/max plumes to show your clients why they need some additional sampling in order to fully characterize their sites.

Remember, when you have missing information that is BOUNDED, you can interpolate and usually get reasonable results, however when the missing information is outside of the range of your data (in x-y, z or time) you must extrapolate to make an estimate. Extrapolation is always an undersirable option (which is why our default gridding is convex hull). Extrapolation must project a trend, and that often gives undesirable results.

Plume visualization discussion

I am looking for tips/tricks/ideas to use when working with chemical data to display nice looking plumes. My education and experience is on the chemistry side, with a little geology and hydrology knowledge picked up from my coworkers over the years.

For projects I have worked on, the data set is usually not ideal to create a nice (you know - upside down melting ice cream cone) looking plume. Over the years - the site investigation attempts to delineate the contaminant extent. Frequently there is not a lot of data at the edges, upgradient, or deep enough to constrain the data.

When trying to visualize the extent of a chemical release, ideally you would have:

    - a nice grid of borings
    - nicely spaced samples in each boring
    - samples ranging from the main point of interest, out to 'clean' samples on horizontally and vertically
    - for time series data, you'd want data for all wells for all events

With a perfect sample set like this, the kriging of the dataset prevents those escaping plumes, where the data shows an increasing gradient towards the edges - with no 'clean' samples to restrict the plume. You also have a client with deep pockets... This can happen when a cleanup starts and at the treatment location, the concentrations drop - while further away the concentrations have not been affected. Having data from all wells for each sampling event also helps in showing the movement (and hopefully cleanup) of the plume.

I have experimented with trying to fill in the holes of a dataset:

    - estimating concentrations at wells that did not exist early in the project
    - interpolating concentrations at wells that were skipped during some sampling events
    - creating false ND samples at the extreme edges or sampling floor

With this post, I hope to gather from the experience of other EVS/MVS users and spark some creative solutions. Please share any helpful ideas that you have.

Thanks!

Azimuth/Elevation settings

If you use the Az_El panel, you can determine the azimuth and elevation (since you're dialing it in). However, when you do a mouse rotation, we have a full, true 6 degree of freedom movement - that's not actually reproducable by a azimuth and elevation. There's no way to go directly to that.

You can, however, capture the Viewer's exact positioning (including using mouse rotations) by using the Animator, and then use the Animator to push that position into a new application. Just use the down arrow in Animator to grab the view settings in your original application, highlight it and do Object->Save Objects to save the animator, and use Object->Load Objects to bring it into the new Application. Hitting the up arrow will copy that exact view into the new app.

Med,

First off, try turn on software renderer. If it works in software renderer, but not OpenGL, it's probably your graphics card causing the crash. (You may need to reboot your system before it works).

If not, memory may be the issue. I'd guess it's a graphics issue more than a RAM issue, but it's difficult to say. I've done up to about 100,000 spheres before, so I know it's possible to do a lot (but very, very slow).

Med,

This is an option in post_samples. It's in the Samples window, and is called Sphere Count Limit. If you have more than 10000 spheres (by default), we switch to color tubes. This is to prevent people from accidentally loading continually measured data and displaying it as spheres (whcih is very slow, and not nearly as clear to visualize as it is using color tubes). You'll just need to bump that up to 30000, and it'll keep them spheres.

However, 30000 spheres can be slow to render on many graphics cards. You may want to consider using a box glyph or something similar and passing it into post_samples instead of using spheres. If your card handles it reasonably well, this isn't necessary.

Med-

Another possible solution to your problem is to duplicate the post_samples module and use your original post_samples and original data file to display only the map spheres and use the second post_samples and revised data file to display only the tubes.

Using multiple post_samples modules can be useful for situations like this where a slightly modified data file is necessary to get the exact desired effect.

A similar situation is when you need to have the labels in one position for some samples and in another position for other samples. By using multiple data files and multiple post_sample modules you can accomplish nearly any combination of labels, spheres, and tubes.

For example: If I choose the 3rd data component (2) from a GWC file with multiple analyte data loaded into post_samples - how can I route that analyte name to a Titles module for display? I want this to happen without having to change titles manually.

Is there a way to get at this information by editing the module and added another output port?

Med,

Unfortunately, this is a limitation to the way post_samples works.

The best workaround for this is to actually use post_samples for the samples themselves, but to turn off the tubes. You can then use read_lines and tubes to create the boreholes at any angle and orientation.

This also has the advantage of allowing boreholes that progress past the last sample (which is occasionally useful).

I am having a problem with angle boreholes displaying properly using post_samples and data in a CSV file. If I have several samples from an angled borehole that are some distance below ground surface, EVS draws the borehole vertically up to the ground surface from the highest elevation sample, instead of projecting the borehole up using the azimuth and plunge defined by the sample coordinates. I created a workaround by creating a dummy sample at 0 downhole distance for each borehole in order to force EVS to draw the angle borehole trace correctly, but this is not completely satisfactory, because now I have sample balls where in reality there is no sample. Is there a way to show angle boreholes properly?

Luis,

We have discussed this with you several times. The best module to use for removing layers with the animator is "subset_cells"

You need to identify the "nX" name for the nodal data component representing Geo_Layer. If you have Krig_3D_Geology connected to 3D_Geology_Map, it should be n3 (these names show up in subset_cells)

In that case your equation should be

n3 >= f1 AND n3 <= f2

With this equation you can use the animator to modify f1 and f2 and you can display a subset of layers from bottom to top, vice versa or within the middle.

Luis,

For embedding directly in Powerpoint, you need to use an AVI file. Unfortunately, none of the "good" codecs are available by default on Windows, so you'll either have to sacrifice some quality, or have the end-user install a codec.

If the user can install a codec, I'd use Lagarith or Techsmith, and just ship the installer with your presentation. Both give perfect, lossless quality. If that is not an option, MS Video 1 is probably the best option, although you may need to tweak the settings to get it looking reasonably good. It is the best codec option that is always available on Windows systems.

You can use a subsetting module to "cut away" based off the Geo_Layer data in your animation. That will be the easiest way to do this animation.

If this is in the XY plane (2D from top down), you can just use overlay_aerial to map this onto any surface.

If the image needs to be placed onto another plane, you can use create_grid to model the plane where you want to put the surface, and use texture_walls to project your image onto that surface. This allows an image to be placed at any orientation at any location.

You can also use post_samples to directly visualize any resistivity or GPR data if you have 3D datasets.

Jamey,

You can use interp_data or external kriging to krige/interpolate values onto your query locations. They can be read with stat_csv_geo or post_samples (display as spheres instead of screens).

Once you've put values onto your points, any points over your threshold fall inside your plume.

We'll look into this and what it would take to make this happen. In the meantime, there is an easy alternative - use http://imagehost.org to post any images or files and link to them in your forum post.

This works well, and has very few limitations (the only being the file needs to be <100MB). For example, here's the MVS logo hosted:

If you setup a finite difference grid that matches your modflow grid, you can use cell_centers and write_coordinates to turn the indicator values into a single x/y/z/indicator value in a text file. There should be a fairly straitforward way to use this in Visual Modflow, although I am not very familiar with Visual Modflow to walk you through the exact process.

Ferenc,

In 9.13, you can just pan with your mouse (provided you use the new defaults in the Animator). The animator will just interpolate from any view (with any center) to any other view (with any center). This is true provided you have the use mouse rotation option enabled (the default for new animator modules).

Otherwise, you can use the Seek button as before, and turn off the use mouse rotations.

Explode Lines

The *.elf file format is able to handle data attributed to the line segments, if the lines are given a data component named Geo_Layer and the topmost layer data value is ZERO, and each layer below increments by one, then the lines can be passed through explode_and_scale and will explode. The *.elf data format is described in detail in the read_lines help section.

To use this method you will need to separate the lines into segments associated with the appropriate geologic layers in the *.elf data file. If this is non-trivial outside of the model, you can accomplish it by reading in the un-separated lines into your model with the geology layers unexploded and then using draw_lines to trace the lines within each geologic unit and write them out in geologic order. Once this new *elf file has been created you will need to edit the new *.elf file to add the Geo_Layer component and data.

An different (and possibly preferred) way to handle this would be to use polyline_spline to break the lines into small segments and then use interp_data to map the geo layer onto the lines. You probably want to check preserve nodes in polyline_spline to remove any smoothing.

This method is may be faster and easier if your line file is complex. If you explode the results directly the lines will be connected across the exploded space. If you want to have the lines break across this space you will need to write out the lines and edit the *.elf file manually where the geo_layer values change by adding two duplicate points at the boundaries of the geo_layers.

Make sure that buildings or read_CAD is not connected to the Viewer. If you leave it connected to the Viewer, you'll be seeing the whole building as well as any cut away portion, and the original, uncut buildings will completely obscure any cut away buildings.

Otherwise, make sure to use the same modules (ie: cut, or area_cut+plume_volume/plume_area, etc) on the output of read_CAD or buildings that you are using on your geologic model.

Frank,

Provide you're using MVS, you would use plume_volume after overburden. In plume_volume turn OFF the Above toggle and set the Subsetting level to 100 (mg/kg). What should result is the excavation volume as a volumetric object.

You can then use volumetrics module to compute the volume for various cutoff levels for the excavation.

For visualization of these plumes you could use ONLY one sequential_subset. However, this module is not volumetric so you could not do computations after it.

As an exercise in MVS, I am using the overburden module to get excavation volumes for a 100 mg/kg plume. I would then like to use the overburden excavation as a surf cut input to then evaluate the volumes of soil with concentrations at different concentrations within the excavated zone only. The plume at concentrations lower than 100 mg/kg extends outside the overburden excavated plume area, but I only want the volumes at selected concentrations within the excavation so that I can calculate treatment costs for the excavated material which are different on a unit basis based on concentration.

Any thoughts or suggestions as to what I am missing?

Luis,

Geologic_surface can include layer_thickness. By looking at the surfaces above/below each layer, you can show the thicknesses at any specific point. Interactive_labels can be used to display the data (thickness) at a specific point.

You can also export the entire surface(s) worth of data using write_coordinates. If you want to look at many locations, this is a better approach.

colors for plume, legend, isolines, & post samples

kdowns wrote:colors:
1) How can I control the color scale for all these modules [3D plume, legend, isolines, post samples] so they are consistent and (ideally) responsive to one another?
You can use the same datamap_editor module, but you will need to set the datamap consistantly on all 3 modules - post_samples, isolines, and 3D_Plume. If you save the datamap as a file, you can load it directly into these modules.

However, datamaps always work on a relative scale (from the min-max of the data). If your modules have different mins or maxes, you will need to pass the output through the change_minmax module to make these consistant first. Once you do that, setting a datamap should keep the colors syncronized correctly.

post samples:
2a) Is it possible to show only the post samples above a certain concentration for a data set (loaded directly in post samples or connected from Krid 3D)?
In the samples window, under "Subsetting Options", you can set a preclip min value. Everything below this min will get taken out.

2b) If post samples is connected to krig 3D using drill guide (instead of loading a separate file) the display shows the nodes as circles instead of as screens even though the file was a .gwc pre-drill guide. Is there any way to make it show the screens?
Drill guide always creates sphere samples, so post_samples will always display them this way. You can have 2 post_samples modules, however - one showing the .dg file created via drill_guide, and a second showing the original well screens. If you set the sample radius slightly larger on the well screens post_samples module, it will completely "hide" the samples as spheres at those locations.

The can be brought in and cut (with the same tools you're using to cut your geology, ie: area_cut -> plume_area, or "cut", or slice, etc). They are loaded as a hollow shell, though, from read_CAD, not as solid objects, so cutting away a CAD structure will be like cutting out a balloon.

If you need solid objects, there are a few options -

The best (and easiest) is to model your structures using the buildings module. Buildings creates volumetric cell types, so the buildings themselves are true volumes and can be cut away.

If that isn't an option, you can use surf_cut in MVS to cut away a 3D grid with your CAD file. This can make a volumetric building, but is limited to the accuracy of surf_cut, which is basically accurate to the size of a cell in the model you are cutting away. If your underground structures are contained in a small region, using create_grid->surf_cut can work well.

Can 3D CAD models be sliced and cut in MVS? If not, can they be drawn in MVS and then cut? I am trying to show structures underground and when we cut away the geology, I would also like to cut away the structures. Looking for some options.

Thanks,

We do not have a near-term plan to support 3D PDF. In our testing, it doesn't handle many of the element types nor model complexity typically created by EVS (at least not well).

There are tools to convert from DWG files to 3D PDF files, and they seem more mature than most of the VRML->PDF converters. That may be a better option.

As to flipping the model upside down - you can try passing your entire model through transform_group and scaling it in Z * -1. That should allow you to flip the entire model over.

Shape_cut and area_cut will work on indicator_geology exactly the same way as they work on any other output. Just make sure that your subsetting modules map the Indicator cell_data through so you can see your indicator data after subsetting based off your area_cut.

To limit based off a study area, I'd recommend using area_cut.

Make sure you're looking at the cell data in slice or external faces - AIK adds cell data for Indicator, so until you choose to view by cell data, the model will appear based off the nodal data in it (passed through from 3D Geology map if you're using the quick method).

Also, AIK creates 2 cell sets per material, so make sure you're turning on the appropriate materials in Explode_and_Scale.

I am having trouble visualizing output from the AIK module in the viewer. I am using version 9.13. I loaded a .geo file with two surfaces (topographic and bedrock surfaces) into Krig 3D Geology to create the grid and constrain the results of AIK. Krig 3D Geology is then passed to 3D Geology Map, then onto AIK. The AIK module seems to run fine, but I am not able to visualize the output from AIK sent via Explode and Scale to slice or external faces. Any suggestions or tips?

You just need to use the Az_El window to handle this. You can do azimuth + 360 by rotating the azimuth dial past north. The numbers on the edges will update automatically, and it will work correctly in the animatior. (For example, if you're at an azimuth of 45 and you rotate the dial around to the same spot, it will report 405.)

However, you'll need to turn off the use mouse rotations in the animator for this to work. The new mouse rotations option that allows for free rotation doesn't use azimuth or elevation (which is why it works with any mouse-driven orientation. One of the side effects is that this only allows single scene rotations of less than 180 degrees. To do a full 360 degree rotation, you need to split it into 3 scenes. This is why we still support the old-style rotations (by turning off that toggle).

Another alternative in MVS is to use your 3D model (not subsetted) as input to Krig_2D's external_data port. Krig_2D will then, by default, take the maximum portions at each node in the 3D grid and collapse the entire model into 2D.

The nice thing about this approach is you don't need the interp_data or slice - you can do area_integrate on Krig_2D's output (or on a plume_area out of Krig_2D), provided you set the display scaling to 0 (otherwise it will distort the surface). If you need to map the data onto the ground surface, you can connect that surface to the external_data port of Krig_2D, and it will interpolate (2D) directly into that surface.

You are correct that you cannot use a slice to compute the area because you cannot be assured that any slice location will intersect the maximum x-y extent.

This is actually a problem which can only be done correctly with MVS. What you do is use the overburden module, but set the Wall Slope (angle from vertical) to zero and the Buffer Size to zero. You then slice through the OVERBURDEN data component.

Overburden is useful here because it creates a pit with vertical walls which encompasses all portions of your plume (its complete x-y extent).

The method of slicing depends on what you really want for an area.

If your site has signficant topographic variation, you really don't want to compute the area projected to the x-y plane. You would really want the true surface area at the ground surface. To compute this, you take the ground surface (from geologic _surface) and offset it a very small amount below ground. Then you use interp_data to map the overburden calculation to the ground surface. You can then cut away the unwanted area with plume_area using the overburden data component at your target plume level. The remaining surface would pass to area_integrate.

MAKE SURE TO SET Z-Scale to 1.0 for all computations.

If your site is very flat, you can just use a horizontal slice to cut through the overburden plume.

Sherko,

If you are just doing a single layer, you can bring your triangles in and extrude them to create a volume. It will act like a single layer, and can be passed into the external_grid port of Krig_3D for kriging analytical information. This only works (easily) for one layer, since you'll need to put your elevation + thickness data on the nodes of the triangles.

Otherwise, what you did will work fine. However, using nearest neighbor may cause some stepping in the surface since it doesn't do any interpolation at all across the points. Using IDW with a small number of points may be better.

I have a Mesh+Node_Data type of EFF. The mesh is not a strucutered one. It is based on a triangular type of element (Prism in 3D)

I extracted the XYZ data for the top and bottom surfaces of the layer I'm interested in to create a large GMF file and applied Krig_3D_Geology with a large number of elements to solve the problem. I used the nearest point option for kriging to get a relatively fast result.

Is there a better way?

Sherko,

If you're using our external grid kriging, there isn't a way to get there directly. You can always put these into an EFF file and adjust the headers appropriately to make it match the output of Krig_3D_Geology. The first line is the key - for use as geology, it will need to be a Mesh_Struct+Node_Data type of field, and have data for elevations of all of your surfaces.

Ferenc-

Although I cannot comment on your problem with Stat_CSV_Geo and .sct data files, I have an alternate potential solution to your problem.

If your goal is to display two different data values at the same point, instead of using sphere color and size to map the different values, you could display one data value with spheres (with a static size) and the other data value via a flat glyph (either a triangle or a square) which is slightly larger than the sphere and consequently the corners of the glyph extend beyond the sphere. Instead of using Stat_CSV_Geo you simply use 2 Post_Samples modules with one displaying spheres and one displaying the glyphs. With this method you can have a color legend for each dataset.

I believe that this solution has the added benefit being easier to comprehend as a color scale is much easier to differentiate visually than a size scale.

I’m sure Reed Jr will comment on your problem if my alternate solution does not meet your needs.

Jamey,

I'm not 100% sure what you are trying to accomplish here, but...

The easiest way to do what (I think) you want to do would be to make a GMF file from both of your surfaces. If you merge both surfaces into a single surface in a GMF file, you could krig it with Krig_3D geology and make a single, full surface that spanned the full extent of both surfaces. Alternatively, you could do a finite difference grid that matched your MODFLOW model's grid and interpolate using the data from both surfaces directly into that grid.

Ferenc,

We don't support direct reading of CAD solid types as volumes. Solids in CAD are a very different concept than our volumetric concept, and converting directly requires a very different approach than the one read_CAD supports.

Right now, the best way to convert an AutoCAD solid into a volume in MVS is to read the solid in, and use it as a surf_cut surface on an existing volume. (The volume can be created via create_grid, or can be an existing model). Surf_cut will cut away everything outside of the solid's surfaces, leaving you with a volumetric representation of things inside your "box" (or other solid). You can then slice/cut/etc the resulting volume.

Marinko,

If you have a water table surface, you can use any of the slice modules to intersect it and the output will be a line (actually many small line segments). These can be written with write_coordinates.

However, thin_fence does not accept a surface as its input so it cannot be used in this way. Nor does EVS-PRO provide any tools to compute the intersections of two surfaces unless one is planar (i.e. from slice, slice_horizontal, etc.).

In MVS, you can use surf_cut, and surf cut one surface with the other. If you pass the output of surf_cut through constant_shell at a cut level of 0, it will result in the line that is the intersection of the two surfaces. This works for any pair of surfaces.

The best option is to have elevation data on your shapefile. If you put in Z info, it will plot directly. You can also add a data attribute that is an elevation and use data_translate to position the shapefile based off that data.

Alternatively, you can use transform_field to translate the shapefile vertically, and move it up.

If the shapefile is line features, you can also use surfmap or geologic_surfmap to drape it over your ground surface. This is often the nicest look.

There would be another little thing. As I try it I don't find any affect of symbols module:Z Offset parameter. The rings stay at the 0 level for any value. Is it proper?

Thank you

Laszlo,

I believe this is because wires do not update the legend appropriately. Try turning off "Automatic" in the Legend labels - it should make the current set (created by tubes) save in the application correctly.

I will investigate whether this can be corrected in 9.2.

I have a pgf file. I brought it by post_sample modul. I connected a Legend to it. I saw the sample points and the Legend as I wanted.
The post_samples_tube was set to Wires.
I saved the application and loaded it back. It resulted that the Legend showed 0-255 instead of 1-19. Then I changed the post_samples_tube to Tubes that caused the Leged showed the good data again (and I set it back to Wires.) Other radio button didn’t cause changing in a good direction.
Is it normal or the my data can cause the problem?

Thanks for advance

You can do this by reading in two sets of data with Stat_CSV_Geo, using combine_components to put them onto the same points, and then using the glyph module. Glyph gives you full control over sizing and coloring independently.

Sherko,

The "pausing" has always been that way. Unfortunately, this is a standard "feature" of any Microsoft Windows application that uses their console subsystem (which is what creates and manages the status window). The old "Message Console" had the same behavior. Fortunately, this has some benefits - you can click in the window to free up CPU cycles if you need them, without causing harm to MVS.

The lack of a prompt is a feature of the new status windows. The old prompt was not useful, and cluttered up the display.

I noticed that when I click the status window (When MVS is busy with some process), MVS pauses and does not respond until I press return and change the focus to another window. I can't remember noticing this in the past.
Besides, in the newer versions the status window does not show any prompt (like DOS) unlike older versions.
Are these planned features? If yes, I would prefer to see a message telling me that MVS is paused.

Yes, it happens when I am also trying to export some images for georeferenced output. It is a high res model. I have tried it using Krig 3D as well as exporting the model as a field and then using the Load EVS field module. Problems occur with both.

I did make one model about a month ago, and the cuts worked. Now, using the same model, these errors occur. I'll try decreasing the resolution of the model.

Do you have the same problems if you are not making a 4DIM file? If your model is VERY high resolution, you may be running out of memory while trying to create the 4DIM.

Otherwise, animating or changing the horizontal slice elevation should work correctly, from what you are describing.

I have one cut module. I have been trying to create a series of about 5 cuts (one at a time) to make a 4dim. THe result would be a 4 dim with one slide of the entire plume, and then 5 slides with cuts at specific elevations (a slide at cut = 5000, one at 4500, etc)

My set up goes from Krig 3D to explode and scale (E&S). E&S then hooks up to both slice horizontal and cut (which also interconnect). Then from cut I go to plume shell and then Viewer.

My guess is that you are using cut modules on invalid input.

What are you trying to accomplish? Why do you have so many cut modules?

If you are trying to subset your plume to a specific region, you may want to consider using area_cut + plume_volume instead of multiple cuts in series.

Min-Max confidence plumes

The max plume will be the region where, given a specific confidence, the plume will be no larger than the reported plume. (The min plume is the region where the plume will be at least that big.) Given your question, I believe the max plume is where you'll want to focus your efforts.

However, if you are looking at excavation, remember that the plume volume may not be enough information. Depending on the site, often doing overburden calculations are required in order to get a sense of how large an excavation will actually become. Just looking at the plume may not provide enough information. With MVS, you can compute overburden of the min, max, and nominal plumes and show, given a confidence, the total excavation extents.

We're trying to determine contaminated areas requiring excavation. We use exceedance levels as the threshold value and generate min-max plumes for three different confidence levels - 80% 90% and 95%. The client wants to know the area that they can be 80%, 90% or 95% confident that the values will be in exceedance of the threshold value and will therefore require excavation. Should we be using the max plume or the min plume?

I believe the ULead plus software can do this, but it's been quite a while since I've tried it. It's one of the less expensive video editing (and DVD authoring) packages out there - I believe it's between $100 and $150. There's a 30 day trial, so you could always download and try it. If it works, let us know.

Ferenc,

It does sound like you are running out of memory trying to create this 4DIM file.

I actually recommend creating an animation as an AVI or other movie style format for this type of animation. If you have lots of frames, especially with a detailed model, this will work better, and often be just as effective as a 4DIM file.

Alternatively, you can use larger step sizes between your frames to reduce the total number of frames required. Also, making your tubes simpler (lower resolution tubes), the changing object in the 4DIM will be smaller, and you may be able to get more frames into the file.

I didnt get any answer, so i try to answer it myself.
I could solve the problem visualiazing the process of building the tunnel by the axe of tunnel as a line insteed as a tube. So i could write more than 100 frames, and achieved the neaded time steps.
I experienced soon earlier, that record_4Dim modul collapse with error message after writing some frames, when objects in Viewer have a high rendering demand. It was the case, when i tryd to write a 4D file from a row of cutted parts of a geolodic model in a way, when cutting plane is moving. My goal was to get 30 steps , but at 13. frame colapsed every times record_4Dim modul.
I think the problem is relating to the fact, that till writing out frames in 4Dim file record_4Dim modul collect all the frames in memory what is running out.

First, you should upgrade to 9.13.

Second, this may be caused by the number of decimal place displayed on the Azimuth_and_Elevation's SCALE slider. If the Az-El window is not visible, this shouldn't matter, but when it is visible, you may be getting scale factors that are truncated to the default 2 decimal places.

The file is saved as .csv

However, it worth mentioning that the surface has nodes located at these points. My goal is to extract data at these selected points (location of bore holes)

Do you think that this causes the problem?

Sherko,

The foremost tenant of using interp_data is that the objects that you want to map the data to, MUST be completely INSIDE of the object with the data. In your case it sounds like you may have a surface with varying elevations rather than a surface at Z=0. If the points are not IN the surface, interp_data will not work.

A little clarification:
I have a surface kriged using an external grid. The output is saved as an EFB file that contains mesh and nodal data (elevation and thickness)

I need to get the elevation and thickness at a list of coordinates. I used Interp_Data to accomplish the task. However, the results I'm getting are not correct. I am getting the same result for most of the points. I noticed that I'm getting the right results for elevations close to and below zero!

I read Interp_Data help file but could not figure out what's wrong.

Un update:
I tried to extrude the surface using the thickness and save it as an EFB file with mesh+node data+cell data
I added the Geo-Layer value to the nodes.
When I looked at the results from Interp_Data I found that the correct results had the correct Geo-Layer 6, otherwise the Geo-Layer was given a value of 7 (one more than the value assigned)

Still couldn't get a clue of what's wrong!

I have passed to Inetrp data the output from Krig 2D which included a surface elevation and thickness as nodal data. On the right input, I passed coordinates of a list of points with zero elevation.

My goal is to get elevations and thicknesses at the required points. When I export the results I get some strange values. Most of the points have the same values which are not related to the input.

Where do you think my mistake is?

I have a tunnel axis as points connecting to each point a Date. I want to visualize the process of developing the tunnel (and in the same time the changes of some parameters in sampling points)
I loaded the tunnel by read line, connected to plume volume for subsetting the line by the current Date, than to tubes modul and to the Viewer. I control the value of current date by time_loop modul. The lenght of time between starting date and end date are 3 years, i want a 3 weeks time step. When i let run time_loop in Viewer it works appropriate, but if i try to write 4D file from it , at 50. frame i get the failer message:

"Runtime error:

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information"

I think it hase to be a memory problem.
Is there any possibility to avoid it?

There is no way to change the default path for individual modules. The paths are organized according to data type. Krig_2D should use the CSV/GWC type data path. Unfortunately there seems to be a bug somewhere that is preventing the module from recognizing changes to this path. We will see if we can find a workaround for this and fix it for the next release.
The post_samples module uses the general data path which cannot be set in the Config module. However if you need to change this path default you can open the ctech\v\param.cfg (an ascii file) and in the DataPaths group change the genData location.

Salt Dome Overhang

As we discussed on the phone, there are a few different ways to approach this problem depending on the nature of your data. When you have a multi-valued surface (one for which any x-y locations have more than one z elevation), you cannot use our standard TIN or surface kriging modules.

1) IF you can rotate your data such that the surface is not multivalued in the rotated space, you can then create a TIN or use kriging and rotate back. This occasionally works.

2) If your data is collected in a logical manner (rings of points at various z coords), you can build your own surface using the EFF format. This is an advanced option, but has been used by Sandia Labs for Salt Domes.

3) If you create a reference point or reference line inside the dome, you can then construct lines that start on your reference and pass through each of your surface definition points. You use these lines to create a sequence of points for each original point. The sequence of points each have x, y, z coordinates and data which represents the distance (negative inside the dome positive outside) from the surface (distance from the original point). This 3D data set is used with Krig_3D (log processing off) to create a volumetric model of the dome. The constant_shell module with a subset level of 0.00 provides the surface, or you can get the inside or outside of the salt volumetrically.

Saving the output of Area_Cut to be used in Volumetrics

Thanks Reed. Initially I had it working by passing area_cut to plume_volume#1 to exclude the volume outside area_cut and then passing Plume_volume#1 to plume_volume#2 to subset on volume below certain elevation and finally connecting to volumetrics.

saving the output of plume_volume#1 to a field file speeds things up.

I had to use 2 plume volumes since volumetrics dosn't have the "Data Above(on) Below (off)" toggle needed to subset volume Below elevation.

Thanks again.

Magid,

Area_cut just adds data in order for the subsetting modules (such as plume_volume) to do cutting. It doesn't actually "cut" the model.

Since you want to take volumes, using plume_volume is really your only option (since it preserves the volumetric nature of the input). You'll need to use plume_volume to subset based off the area_cut parameter, then run that into volumetrics.

However, plume_volume should only need to be run one time. You should be able to place it right after your Load_EVS_Field in your network, so all of your other operations (ie: elevation subsetting) happen after plume_volume. This will prevent it from running on a regular basis.

You also can run your field through plume_volume one time and save the output of plume_volume as an EFB. If you load that EFB, you'll no longer need to have the plume_volume in your network and running.

I have a dataset of scattered xyz points that represent the surface of a salt dome. I would like to interpolate those into a surface and slice through it a different elevations. I can easily display the point data and I know how to slice easy enough. The problem is there are overhangs in salt surface so I have z points at similar xy points, not exact but close. Using, scat to tin or Krig 3D geology gives me a surface but it dosent recoginize the overhangs instead giving me long vertical "spikes" were this occurs. Is there an easy way to get a surface with the overhang features that I am missing? I thought about adding data to the file and using the krig 3D to make a plume type renedering out of the salt.

I'm still not used to the new modules (Plume_Volume = Volume_Plume)

Another problem with Plume_Volume is that you have to insure that no nodes will be stripped off.

FYI - Using plume_volume will also have the disadvantage of removing all of your layering/cell sets. This will prevent you from being able to do things such as turn on and off layers in Explode_and_Scale.

The other method mentioned (combine_components) does not have that problem.

Sherko,

I have no idea what "Volume_Plume" is? Did you mean plume_volume? However, plume_volume would be a dangerous way to do what you describe since you may subset the grid.

The best module for your issue is combine_components. You only NEED to use the first input port (of its 6 identical), but by using more than 1, you can even rearrange the order of the nodal data fields.

Tim,

I'm glad you figured it out. Once you have the server running, there is a small config file (servers.cfg) that needs to be placed in the install folder. This file tells each computer where to find the license server. It is documented in the help at:

http://www.ctech.com/evs_help/installat … client.htm

One thing to be aware of - if you move the license server, you'll need to regenerate this file to point to the new server.

There is an optimization in the 4DIM recorder that can cause it to not recognize the change in images (it's trying to save file size).

The solution here is to use multiple overlay_aerial modules, and just change their visibilities as you change frames. This will let you have any number.

However, it's often a better idea to do this sort of thing as a video animation instead of a 4D animation. The 4D file size will tend to get quite large, as it needs to keep all of the imagery embedded in the 4DIM file. Often, an AVI will produce a smaller, nicer animation if you have many images.

I have been using this feature in the 4DIM Player - and discovered that GROMATA.COM is watermarked in the upper right corner of all saved images.

Any way to have this not happen?

I just tried doing the same export from the viewer module in the main application, and the program crashes. I setup a simple model of just post_samples and viewer modules and it doesn't crash.

So - I need to figure out which of the 34 modules in my model have been corrupted. Any way I can do this with rebuilding the model network from scratch? 34 modules are a lot of work to reconnect and to configure just to be able to get image exports without a watermark for Gromata.

I like to get the images exports from the player rather than the main program because the display doesn't resize and move when moving between frames. In the main program, if I am stepping through subsetting components in the plume_shell module, the viewer window jumps around. This makes getting screenshots from the same perspective quite impossible.

Laszlo,

Try this with the software renderer. It may be a graphics card issue. If that is working, please let us know what type of graphics card you have in your system.

You changed double-clicking on a module to bring up the module menu. So now how do I go about drilling down into the module now to customize input/output ports, etc?

Thanks,

Reed,

Yes I installed the 9.12 version. Later I got a task to change the background that we could choose the best pictures for the poster. Every cases (with one) earlier background colour appeared on the captured picture while the Viewer showed that colour I wanted.

Yes. The animator creates its own output images - if there is one in your application already, it can cause problems, since the Viewer really only supports outputing to a single output image at a time.

I recommend disconnecting any unused modules from your viewer before running your animation. That will prevent some of the more common problems like this from occurring.

We haven't seen this issue. Are you running v9.12? There were some issues in version 9 that were resolved with save screen capture.

Reed,

I used the 'Viewer' 'Save Screen Capture as Image...' function in two cases. First time the 'post_sample' modul was connected to the 'Viewer' modul. The captured picture was correct. Second time I disconnected the 'post_sample' modul from the 'Viewer' modul. The 'Viewer' showed the objects without boreholes as I wanted but using again the 'Save Screen Capture as Image...' function the captured picture showed the boreholes on the *.png file.

Have you met this problem yet?

I updated to EVSpro version 9.12 last week and then tried the animator. We also tried on an other PC with version 9.1 but had the same problem.
Error retrieving float value: abs_scale
But now I found the reason: EVS crashes if there is an other Output modul like Output Images

What version of EVS or MVS are you running? I believe this is due to a bug that was resolved in 9.1. I just tested in 9.12 (the current release), and am not getting any errors.

Installer File - Windows XP problems

Brian,

It's probably due to it being a large file. Also, if you have any form of desktop search service running (like Windows Search or Google Desktop Search), it will slow file operations down even more.

Fortunately, downloading EVS installs isn't something you should have to do every day, so hopefully it won't be a huge problem moving forward.

Not sure if I am the only one experiencing this - but when I download the installer file - Windows behaves very slowly when dealing with the file. If I save it to the desktop, and then decide I'd rather place it in another folder, Windows won't move it immediately. I can continue to do other things - but opening a new Windows Explorer pauses for quite a long time (maybe only a minute or so, but much longer than usual).

Maybe because it is 100+MB and windows has to search the whole file for the custom icon.

When opening a directory that has the file in it, the same slowness to almost a freeze-up of Windows happens.

Anyone else have this issue?

Adding layers to Krig 3D model

Since you want to create a multiple layer model, you will need to create a geologic file (either GEO or GMF), and use Krig_3D_Geology (or Spline_Geology) to read and process that. You then connect the output of Krig_3D_Geology to Krig_3D, and Krig_3D will use those surfaces to build the 3D model.

This allows you to krig chemical data into the geologic data. For more information, I recommend reviewing the workbooks. The second half of Workbook 5 (3D Kriging Workbook) deals with adding geology to a chemical model.

I'm using Krig 3D (EVS Standard) to model bore holes with depth and a percentage of chemical contaminant. The model is basic, but it's looking pretty good. I'd like to add a groundwater layer, a bedrock layer and an actual ground elevation layer to this model. Can I add this data to the .csv file that I've already created?

Transparent color in PNG/GIF

No. We actually decided to deprecate this functionality because it caused other problems to occur with rendering. The renderer wasn't correctly honoring depth to camera when there were other transparent objects in the scene being blended with a semi-transparent-texture.

You can make regions of an image transparent by using multiple input surfaces into multiple overlay_aerial modules, and having each module's transparency set differently. This is the currently supported means of allowing semi-transparent regions within a single surface.

Interp_data changes coordinates versus original coordinates

No. It's saved internally as a number, not a string, so there is a loss of precision on the read of the data (floating point numbers aren't represented exactly in computers). Write_Coordinates will always write out a specific number of decimal places.

Interp_data would have no effect on this. In fact, it would most likely cause more differences to appear, since there is an interpolation occuring, which (even with a distance of 0) will probably cause very small rounding artifacts due to the precision of floating point math in a computer.

This loss of precision is statistically insignificant (typically less than 1e-12 if the numbers are small, but increasing as the numbers get larger). EVS and MVS use certain tricks internally to keep these as small as possible, even with very large coordinates.

Is there any way to get the overlay_aerial module to honor the 'transparent' color in PNG or GIF files? Currently -

I guess this is what the deprecated module image_mask did...but there is no mention of how this functionality was replaced.

Is there some way to do this with overlay_aerial?

4DIM Player version differences

There are no differences in the free and licensed 4Dim players.

The differences are in which version of EVS/MVS creates the 4Dim.

MVS creates 4Dim files that can be read by the free 4Dim player.

EVS-Pro creates 4Dim files that need the licensed player to be viewed. This is one of the capability differences between MVS and EVS-Pro.

What are the differences between the 'free' 4DIM Player and the licensed 4DIM Player?

I just noticed today when setting up a new computer that there is a 4DIM player for purchase.

Will the standalone version still allow opening of any 4DIM files? Can our clients still use this free viewer to see our 4DIM model exports, or do they need to purchase the licensed version?

What parameters control minimum downsizing in raster_to_geo?

It's mostly a memory issue. Setting the downsize to 1 will preserve the original image's resolution, but that is often unrealisticly high for a 3D model.

For example, an image of 1000x1000 ends up creating a 1 million node model for a single surface, which will work on most systems, but is noticably slow on some systems due to the high resolutions once you use it in geologic_surface, etc.

Often, GetTiffs will be MUCH higher resolutions than that - sometimes up to hundreds of millions of nodes, which will not run on a single PC.

Gaussian simulations are basically a giant random number generator - they don't really require resource sharing between points, so I'd expect that to be nearly 100% cpu bound. Kriging has other issues - it does require some resource sharing, which requires locking and prevents 100% CPU usage in most cases.

That provides different results, though. Breaking out the kriging into separate regions will cause the boundaries between regions, in particular to change.

Part of the issue is there are locks that occur during the kriging process.
