Creating Groundwater Chemistry (.gwc) Files

Groundwater Chemistry or parameter files can be created from any view or table if that view or table contains at least the following information:

x-y coordinates

Elevation or depth information for the Top of screen interval

Elevation or depth information for the Bottom of screen interval

Analyte (chemistry) or parameter fields (one or more)

It is also desirable to have a Boring ID and ground surface elevation.

The following table is an example having these fields:

The Create Groundwater Chemistry File tab of the C Tech Data File Creation and Launch Window will automatically select appropriate fields if the naming of each field follows the following guidelines. In all cases field name capitalization can be upper or lower case. If parts of a word are shown in bold, only that portion of the word must be present at the beginning of the field name.

If the field name is ID or starts with key or starts with primary and ends with key that field is ignored by the selection process.

X coordinate field should begin with X or Easting.

Y coordinate field should begin with Y or Northing.

Z coordinate fields should begin with Z or Elevation and will automatically assume the data is elevation (vs. depth)

If the Z coordinate field should begin Depth it is assumed to be depth below ground surface.

If the second word for the elevation fields is Top or Bottom it will automatically determine which fields represent the top and bottom of the screen interval.

Boring ID field should begin with Boring (e.g. Bore) or Well. For example if ID was used for the boring or well name, it will be ignored and must be selected manually.

Ground Surface field can begin with Top or Ground or Grnd.

All other fields are assumed to be Analyte or Parameter fields. If there are extra fields these must be deselected.

If the Z coordinate information in your view or table is elevation (vs. depth) and the fields are appropriately named, it should fill in all of the fields as shown below (and above).

Upon clicking on the Create GWC File button and specifying the name of the file, it will be created with all required header lines per C Tech specifications.
