Selecting a pull-down command

Definition

A pull-down command instructs EVS to perform some operation. Pull-down commands appear in the menu bar along the top of the Network Editor and the Viewer module.

Target modules

A pull-down command may apply to a selected module(s). Before you select a pull-down command, you typically first select the target modules.

Grayed-out commands

EVS grays out commands that are not available in the current context. Typically this means that you need to first select a target module.

Convention

In this manual, a command's name indicates its location in the main menu. For example, File->Exit refers to the Exit command, located under File.

Method 1

One way to select a pull-down command is with a continuous mouse gesture:

1.  Move the mouse pointer to a main-menu command (File, Edit, Object, Journal, Options, or Help) Note that only File and Help are available for EVS For ArcView.

2.  Press and hold down the left mouse button. The command's pull-down command list appears.

3.  Move the mouse pointer to the desired pull-down command.

4.  Release the mouse button. The Network Editor executes the command.

You do not have to select a command from a pulled-down command list. To remove the command list without making a selection, move the mouse pointer completely out of the command list, then release the mouse button. Or move the mouse pointer to another main-menu command.

Method 2

A second way to select a pull-down command is to select a main-menu command, then select a pull-down command:

1.  Move the mouse pointer to a main-menu command.

2.  Select the command with the left mouse button. You do not keep the button held down. The command's pull-down command list appears.

3.  Move the mouse pointer to the desired pull-down command.

4.  Select the pull-down command. The Network Editor executes the command.

You do not have to select a command from a pulled-down command list. To remove the command list without making a selection, select something else, such as another part of the Network Editor or another main-menu command.

Method 3

The third way to select a pull-down command is to use a keyboard shortcut. Notice that each main-menu command and each pull-down commands has a single underscored letter. The underscore indicates the shortcut letter for the command.

To select a command with a keyboard shortcut:

1.  Press Alt-letter for the main-menu command to pull down the command's list. For example, Alt-f pulls down the command list for File.

2.  Press letter for the desired pull-down command. For example, x selects the Exit command when the File command-list has been pulled down. If the desired command has no keyboard shortcut, you can select the command with the mouse.

You do not have to select a command from a pulled-down command list. To remove the command list without making a selection, select another part of the Network Editor.
